Overview
The word Porepunkah is Hindu for ‘gentle breeze’…
Porepunkah is a laidback community 6km from Bright on the Great Alpine Road. Built around the junction of the Buckland and Ovens Rivers, it is the nearest town to Mount Buffalo National Park which dominates the skyline to the south. Porepunkah is also the entry point for the beautiful Buckland Valley.
In summer when the rivers run slowly this is a favourite place for families offering a riverpool with lifeguards and a toddlers pool with safe areas to splash, swim, float in a tyre and launch a canoe as well as great BBQ facilities.
In winter Porepunkah is a great base to enjoy some tobogganing with the kids or trail walking and wildflowers during the warm months at Mount Buffalo. Ski gear and chains can be hired in Porepunkah.
Being at the junction of the Buckland and Ovens Rivers, the town has a very beautiful central reserve with shady riverbanks and playground, picnic tables and riverside walks. Canoeing and rafting on the river is also popular as is swimming in the refreshing waterholes. Porepunkah is also right on the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail, where you can cycle to the local cellar doors belonging to Mayford Wines, Ringer Reef and Boynton’s Feathertop Winery.
Porepunkah- a peaceful and appealing little town, nestled at the base of majestic Mount Buffalo is a treasure waiting to be discovered.
